What is the Basic Composition of a Fibre Optical Communication System?

1. Optical transmitter of fibre optical communication system


The optical transmitter is an optical transceiver that realizes the conversion between electricity and light. It consists of light source, driver and modulator. The function of the optical transmitter of the basic optical fiber communication system is to modulate the electric signal from the electric terminal to the light wave emitted by the light source to become a modulated light wave, and then couple the modulated optical signal to the optical fiber or cable for transmission. The electric terminal is a conventional electronic communication device.


2. Optical receiver for fibre optical communication system


The optical receiver is an optical transceiver that realizes the conversion between light and electricity. It consists of an optical detector and an optical amplifier. The function of the optical receiver of the fibre optical communication system is to convert the optical signal transmitted by the optical fiber or optical cable into an electrical signal through the optical detector. Then, the weak electrical signal is amplified to a sufficient level by the amplifying circuit and sent to the electrical terminal at the receiving end.


3. Optical fiber or optical cable for fibre optical communication system


Optical fiber or optical cable constitutes the transmission path of light. Its function is to couple the dimmed signal from the sender to the light detector at the receiver after long-distance transmission via optical fiber or cable to complete the task of transmitting information.


4. Repeater of fibre optical communication system


The fiber optic repeater is composed of a light detector, a light source and a decision regeneration circuit. The optical fiber communication system repeater has two functions: one is to compensate the attenuation of the optical signal when it is transmitted in the optical fiber; the other is to deal with the impulse of waveform distortion.


5. Passive components such as optical fiber connectors and couplers of the fibre optical communication system


Since the length of the optical fiber or optical cable is limited by the optical fiber drawing process and the construction conditions of the optical cable, and the drawing length of the optical fiber is also limited (such as 1Km). Therefore, an optical fiber line may have the problem of connecting multiple optical fibers. Therefore, the connection between the optical fibers and the connection and coupling between the optical fiber and the optical terminal are indispensable for the use of passive components such as optical fiber connectors and the fbt coupler in optical fiber communication systems.
